CHAPTER SEVEN

“SINCE THIS IS your first time, let’s practice on the sand before we hit the waves.” Isabella nodded to two surfboards a few feet away that they’d hauled down from her flat earlier. It had been a week since they’d slept together at his place and the first time their work schedules had coordinated, so they were spending time together, getting to know each other better still by sharing things they loved. Today was Isabella’s choice, so of course, they were surfing. Isabella had checked the weather forecasts earlier this morning before they’d left her flat, and thanks to some storms brewing out in the Atlantic from off the coast of western Africa, thousands of miles away, the conditions were perfect at Bogatell. Well, perfect for an experienced surfer like her, anyway.

“Okay.” Carlos took off his T-shirt and dropped it onto his beach towel next to his flip-flops and sunglasses. “Is that for me?” A black wet suit sat next to one of the boards.

“If you want it. The water’s cold, but you get used to it quickly. Up to you.”

“I’m good.” He wanted to feel the salt water on his skin with as little barrier as possible, no matter how chilly it might be. With open-water swimming and surfing outlawed in his home country of Cuba for fear people would leave for good, it would be a relatively new experience. The only other time he’d been out in the water here was the first night he’d met Isabella, but with a man’s life in their hands, his attention had obviously been elsewhere.

She smiled and led him to her board. “You’ve got sunscreen on, right?”

“Si.” He had a good base tan and he was olive skinned anyway, but still. One could never be too careful with the ultraviolet rays. Also, bringing along the stuff might give him a chance to get Isabella’s hands on him again. “But...” He bent and picked up the bright yellow tube of sunscreen from his beach towel and held it out to her, not missing the way she checked him out. His skin tingled from more than the heat now.

“You didn’t get your back,” Isabella said, taking the stuff from him and squirting it out in her hand before walking around behind him. Beneath his striped board shorts, his body tightened at the first cool touch of her hand on him. “How’s that?”

Carlos nearly moaned, his eyes slipping closed as she rubbed the cream into the knotted muscles between his shoulder blades. “Good, hermosa,” he managed to get out, the words rough with suppressed need. They couldn’t do anything here, not with all the tourists and kids around, but man. He wanted to. Boy, did he want to. “That feels so good.”

Tingles exploded through his body, and it took all his willpower not to turn and scoop Isabella into his arms and haul her back to her flat, caveman-style, to have his wicked way with her. His breath hitched as she leaned in, her fingers tickling the hair at the nape of his neck.
